Tips to Clean Large Area Rugs

It takes a considerable amount of time to choose a perfect rug for your house. It is not easy to get a rug which satisfies your need and also suit your aesthetics. Some families pass area rugs down from generation to generation. But, what happens when your beloved rug gets spoiled? It is not easy to clean a large area rug. Moreover, improper cleaning can destroy your rug. To avoid this, some people have opted to buy rugs which were not of first choice, but easy to clean. You don’t need to compromise on this anymore. Here are some tips by which you can keep your large area rugs clean and awesome looking.

Vacuum…. and Vacuum Often

The easiest way to clean your rugs normally is vacuuming. Area rugs that are heavily used, such as entry rugs, should be cleaned at least two times in a week. Rugs with less traffic can be attended to on a bi-weekly basis. With consistent vacuuming, rugs tend to remain cleaner and healthier.

Never Rub Liquid Spills into the Rug

If a liquid is spilled on your rug, don’t grind it. Instead use a towel to blot the liquid. Once the liquid is blotted, you can then use stain removers to remove the stain.

What about Odors?

One of the best ways to deal with a bad odor is to sprinkle baking soda all over your rug. The baking soda will help to absorb the odor. Keep the soda on your rug overnight and then vacuum it the following day.To remove a pet urine stain and odor, take a sprinkle bottle and fill it with equal amount of water and vinegar. Mist this solution of water and vinegar over your rug. The vinegar disinfects and deodorizes the rug and doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.

When Should You Have Your Area Rug Professionally Cleaned?

You can also increase the longevity of your rugs with professional cleaning. If you rug is used extensively, then you should clean your rugs by professional cleaners at least once in a year. On the other hand, if they are not used much, you can opt to have your large area rug cleaned every 2 -3 years.
